What is the meaning of a Dark Night of the Soul – A dark night is not necessary!

A dark night of the soul is a belief that it

is necessary to go through hell to get to heaven.

Despite what the ego will tell you,

A Dark Night of the Soul is NOT necessary.

I wrote this blog originally in 2018 where I believed (feared) a dark night was necessary. Thankfully Jesus showed me I was completely wrong. This is a happy update. God’s Will is perfect happiness, and a Dark night is a denial of God’s Will.

Some spiritual traditions refer to a deep period of darkness and pain associated with Spiritual Awakening as “A Dark Night of the Soul.”

The ego would like nothing better than every student of A Course in Miracles (or any other spiritual tradition for union with God/complete undoing of the ego) to have a Dark night.

The ego is the perpetuation of pain and suffering that is maintained through the hidden subconscious desires for painful experiences. The ego’s nature is interpretive, and it never interprets spiritual awakening in a positive manner. Thus, for some who awaken, part of the process seems to be a period of darkness and pain.
The good news is that it need not be experienced if the underlying mechanisms (desires) of the ego are understood.
By understanding the nature and source of all pain and suffering and releasing the cause of pain and suffering (deeply hidden subconscious desires) it is possible to transcend without a dark night.
In A Course in Miracles, the change of mind to release these hidden desires is called a miracle.

A Dark Night of the soul (a painful and dark spiritual awakening) that is referred to in some spiritual traditions arises out of hidden desires for pain and suffering experience.

The hidden subconscious belief under a dark night of the soul experience is that it is necessary to go through hell to get to heaven. And there is the belief that somehow this is required by God. God does not require a dark night of the soul, but the ego will try to make you believe He does.
If you are experiencing what you think is a Dark night, you can be SURE you are refusing to talk to Jesus—the Voice of Wisdom/Inner Light/Holy Spirit within—because this Voice of Truth will tell you differently and show you a different way.
All experiences are desired experiences. Every one including a Dark night! All fear, illness and suffering is desired. Yet when this is seen, this is happy news, because it can also be seen that this need not be the experience
As soon as I realized that a dark night was desired experience, I started asking Jesus to help me release ANY subconscious desire for a dark night experience! it was humbling to see that this desire was still lurking in the subconscious mind, yet happiness to see that it can be released.

When desires are released (the death wish), including the desire for a dark night of the soul, then the experience can no longer arise.

What is striking is seeing how much resistance there is to deeply looking at and releasing the desire for a dark night of the soul! Persistence is often necessary.

Dark night is a denial of God’s Will.

A dark night is the desire for an experience of attempting to win heaven by going through hell.

The ego wants you to have a “horrendous awakening experience”

The ego by its very nature denies the simplicity of the Divine Light within, and thus would have you have a “horrendous awakening experience”. What if a dark night is only a desired experience that the ego hides in the deep caverns of the subconscious mind–the mistaken concept that it is necessary to go through hell to get to heaven–and this idea can be released, so that the experience of a dark night can not manifest?

If you hunt for darkness you will find it.

This is an excerpt from my original post (below), and Jesus told me this was unguided! A good reason to ask for guidance on everything. I can now see that there can be pride in having a “big dark night of the soul”! The ego is comparative even about a dark night.

I was surprised to find in a “google search” that so little is written on this dark night of the soul-a term first coined in a poem by John of the Cross. I found myself guided to read his teachings (DarkNight-StJohnoftheCross.pdf) and this condensed version https://catholicstrength.com/?s=dark+night and can feel in his words much of the same teachings as in ACIM. Every idea of the world must be given up and seen through in the Light of Truth.

It is necessary to purify all of the thoughts and ideas of the world and go naked to your God (contemplative prayer). The purification is talked about in non dual traditions as well. (ACIM for non-dual students)

This has all been very humbling, and I can now understand the great value of humbleness for God’s holy kingdom.

To turn hell into Heaven is the function of God’s teachers, for what they teach are lessons in which Heaven is reflected. And now sit down in true humility, and realize that all God would have you do you can do. Do not be arrogant and say you cannot learn His Own curriculum. His Word says otherwise. His Will be done. It cannot be otherwise. And be you thankful it is so. M-14.5.9

Daily Light Circles via Zoom to clear denials of Divinity, ACIM

Tips for using Zoom

These denials (desires to deny Divinity) are the same as the desire to block the awareness of Love. Some traditions call this Agape Love. These blocks are actually a desired means to deny what we are now—perfect, whole and complete.

Light Circles are a simple, immediate, and direct experience. It is easy, joyful and powerful to see the choice to deny divinity and release it with assistance from Jesus. Light Circles are a powerful means to join together as Light, and see immediately that darkness - the desire to have an experience other than Divine nature, does not exist. Further, Light Circles are an opportunity to learn to speak directly with Jesus and be guided specifically by him. This is the growing experience of beings who attend Light Circles regularly.

What happens in a Light Circle?

The basic steps for Advanced Light Circles:

Welcome and invitation to Jesus (the Christ Light within) to assist.
Focus on the Light within. Ask Jesus for help. Which miracles are to be performed? Which desires am I to look at and release through a miracle today?
Place beliefs and desires in the Light. (Many can be found in ACIM text or ask Jesus to provide these directly).
See what is true. Listen for guidance from the Holy Spirit--the Light within.
If inspired at the end of the session, share from your direct experience.
If time permits, seeming decisions of the world can be offered to the Light for guidance.
